I funded a Tezuka translation, a local theater production, and an artist taking his work to a gallery and they've all turned out well with stuff delivered on time or close to it. It helps that the funding request and reward were small (a print, tickets, book) and things I might've bought if I saw them in a store. They were also done by people who have worked in the field before, have a specific and realistic goals, and are small studios with thin profit margins so asking for funds didn't seem like a cash grab. Also, none promised something "revolutionary", used sarcastic or cutesy language in their Kickstarter page, or were designed to appeal to nerd sensibilities (handmade/steampunk/iphone/3D). It seems when you deal with amateurs who have no clue what they're doing or big studios that get zillions of dollars you run into problems since if they end up with a destroyed reputation, it doesn't matter to them long-term. I'm reluctant to write off Kickstarter entirely, especially since it's not a bad way to find niche or local projects, but it's no surprise that Chick treats his backers with contempt. Why shouldn't he? They already said that they'll continue to give him money. |
