This worries me. Are they neglecting this crucial detail because they're huge fags hoping to ressurect an argument over whether games can be art, or is that just because the combat is so shallow it's not worth mentioning?

DETAILS PLEASE.

I've never played DMC3 or Ninja Gaiden, but I would have to say that, as of the 2nd or 3rd area (after the tutorial mission), you would have to be seriously fucking good at games to think it was too easy. I don't know what kind of Super Hard Games Of Hardness the gamespot reviewer has been playing, but normal mode is plenty hard enough for me. Just hard enough that I have to sit up and pay attention and I still die fairly frequently. Checkpoints are usually pretty well-spaced, so it hasn't gotten frustrating yet.

Anyways: the combat system is not shallow at all. On the contrary, it's fun as hell. You have a few basic moves (regular attack, hard attack, grab) and the jumping versions of same. What's really great about it is that the moves change depending on what kind of bad guy you're fighting. Example: if you're fighting regular grunt undead soldiers, the grab command grabs the guy, you punch the shit out of him and then pin him and hack him to death. BUT: if you're fighting harpies (harpies are midget-sized bat-women in this), the grab button throws it on the ground, where you then stomp on its neck and pull up hard on its wings. Result: one blood (blood) drenched wingless torso on the ground and two wings in your hands. Schwuck!

The "minigame" system that gets mentioned often but never explained in any review I saw is, basically there are some tougher monsters that you can't grab right away. When they get beat down enough (or some other condition is met), they get a picture of a controller button over their heads. Hitting that button puts you into a little one-on-one struggle with the monster (monster wrestling!) where you have to hit keys as they pop up onscreen. If you follow the key sequence right, then you kill the monster and you get some bonus health or whatever. If you fuck it up then the monster flips and then wrecks you.

It's a lot like in Bloodlines where you occassionally need to jump a dude and drink his blood to recharge. If you're mid-combat and need some magic points, time for medusa-wrestling.

Other good parts about the combat:
-the differences in fighting style and visual look as you level up are obvious and satisfying.
-the monsters are very different from each other - each requires its own fighting technique. Example: Undead soldiers and minotaurs can be jump-attacked to good effect, but if a medusa sneaks in there and petrifies you, if you're in the air when you turn to stone you're dead... but you can mingame your way out of being turned to stone if you're on the ground. And so on and so forth.
-I think I said this already, but the grab kills are wonderful. Favorite one so far: these drilling automaton skeletons, if you grab-kill one, you yank one of its sword-arms off and then chop it in half with its own arm.

This is just a sweet game in general. The graphics and sound are amazing. There's almost no loading, and when it does have a load time it's usually about 1 second. The combat is fun. The leveling up is sassifying. The puzzles make you think but don't require dream-logic. It's really violent. There are fat-fuckin' titties all over the place.

The only negative thing about it so far: one character is wearing green in-engine but is wearing white in the following cutscene(!!!!?) (!?!?). I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that this is probably INC's fault. It would have been a really, really good game if he hadn't fucked that part up so bad. =(

This evening I played it until my eyes finally bugged out.
