The Walking Dead: Assault gets something wrong about zombies that every other zombie game has gotten right, including Plants Vs. Zombies. Here's what the designers apparently didn't know:
You can't beat zombies by hunting them down and killing them.
The single most fundamental attribute of zombie horror is that there are unlimited zombies. They will eventually overwhelm you. That's their core trait.
Every mission in The Walking Dead: Assault comes down to this: you are in a new area, clear this area of zombies. It has 80 zombies, kill 80 zombies to beat this level. So basically, what we're talking about is 4 armed men who walk into a new part of down and kill all the unarmed civilians that they find there. The "zombies" might as well be villagers or something. They don't need a braaaains motivation to kill you: they need to mob and kill you before you kill them!
There's attractors that you can set off to draw zombies (alarms and such); I like to imagine that they are full of clean diapers and bottles of water. The "zombies" run towards them and I mow them down with my machine gun. |
