What if act 3 of Diablo 2 had platform jumping in a level constantly at war with the camera?
I gotta say the sewer level > blighttown > swamp level > hell level progression kinda sapped my enthusiasm for the game. I could have handled any of these if they were interspersed with some outdoor levels, but fuck, stacking them all up was a shit idea. It was cool to make a continuous walk from the surface down to hell, and it does a good job of stressing the vertical scale of the world, but I think their grand level design got in the way of making a fun game there.
Then, Tomb of the Giants. LET'S HAVE A LEVEL SO DARK YOU CAN'T SEE THE END OF YOUR DICK. At that point I was pretty much grinding through to see the ending and saying fuuuuuuuuuck you every time I died.
PvP! Nothing like invading in that area and knowing the host is shitting their pants because no one can see each other but you can hear him and not vice versa.
The whole thematic design getting in the way of a fun game really hampers PvP though.
Forest Hunters: The easiest PvP covenant to join and get invasions with. Unfortunately also the most broken and unfair by design. If you're not bare minimum soul level 100 don't even bother. For some reason invasions only happen for gankers. I tried leaving the covenant and hanging around the forest in human form because I figured most of the cheap players wouldn't be on the invading side. Never saw a single invasion. Protip: if you spot a white phantom with the host, just black crystal out of there and save yourself from the estus chugging cheapness.
Darkmoon: Impossible to find and join without looking it up. In 3 days of constantly using the orb and ring, I got ONE invasion out of it. It's a shame because it was a totally fair fight.
Gravelord: Extremely easy to miss unless you walk (not run) past one certain spot. You get a fun miracle out of it, but holy shit this covenant is gimped by STORY. Once you defeat Nito - which you have to at some point in order to beat the game - you can no longer rank up the covenant or rejoin if you ever leave it. Did I mention you can only join in the level right before fighting Nito? I never got a single invasion out of 2 days of this. To even try you have to use a consumable item that can only be found by farming basilisks in The Depths (average of one per run), the item is consumed even if you don't get an invasion (unlike cracked red orbs), you have to be human, AND the area boss has to still be alive. What is the point of this that can't be done easier with the red soapsign or just going through levels normally in human form? It could at least give you chuckles by telling you when your black phantoms kill people.
Dragon: Does anyone even bother with this?
Darkwraith: The only valid option for fair PvP. Also the bitchiest about STORY next to Gravelord. Locked out of joining if you take a main quest item to where you were told to bring it instead of some minor npc in an area you might not have even completed yet. Permanently locked out of a bonfire and major resource if you do join. |
