It just looked like a bunch of pre-rendered cutscenes - and not even particularly GOOD (by thirteen-year-old me standards, meaning photorealistic) pre-rendered cutscenes! By the time FFVII came out, I'd already seen the Secret of Vulcan Fury trailer, which promised a CGI DeForest Kelley who was literally better than the real thing. How were a bunch of crude Japanese puppets supposed to compete with that? Final Fantasy fans had the last laugh, though, when I ended up buying the latest entry in another classic series instead: Erick Avari's Zork: Grand Inquisitor :(
