Note: I have not seen the movie Looper, I'm just commenting on the above items.
Telekinesis may be possible although I think the examples of bending spoons has been shown generally to be faked. And there's a big potential for misconduct. A really great movie called The Medusa Touch, starring Richard Burton and Lee Remick, shows what could happen if you get someone with the ability to use his mind to cause things like disasters because he thinks he can play God, or that there is no God and he's decided to take over the job. It's a great movie and I recommend seeing it.
As for time travel, your basic problem is the method to get there. As far as going forward in time, you can slow down time by moving near the speed of light, the only problem is the faster you go the more energy you need until moving one pound of matter requires as much if not more energy than the sun gives out. Very expensive. And you can't go backward.
Now, presuming we figure a way to go backward in time, that has the potential to to trigger paradoxes, if you go back in time can you change the future, and if you do, can you potentially damage your own existence or change the conditions of your existence? And the results may not be controllable, they may be good or bad, and the consideration on whether the results are good or bad depend on who's making the judgement. Going back in time and killing Hitler might be a good idea, but then if Nazi Germany continues, just as nasty, under the remaining leadership and as a result, the U.S. doesn't help out Britain or it delays the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor long enough that the Japanese technical center wasn't destroyed in a military attack, and as a result the Japanese develop the Atomic Bomb - they were working on it at the same time the U.S. and Germany were - and the Japanese target New York and Washington - and maybe the Axis powers win, all because someone killed Hitler and there was no easy target to hate.
There are other questions. Can you prevent yourself from going back in time and thus create a paradox, e.g. if you killed your past self and you disappear, how do you get back to kill yourself if you're not there, and more than that, what does this do for everything you had done from stuff you bought and bills you paid for, children you produced, people you saved from an accident, misery or disaster - that don't get saved - and thus the bad event(s) you would have prevented happens? Maybe things become worse as a result.
Clarence points this out in It's a Wonderful Life after George gets his wish that he'd never been born, since George was never born, ergo his brother died as a child in a drowning accident, so his brother wasn't there to save the men on his navy vessel and they all died. If the past doesn't happen, the paradoxes leave a huge hole.
One answer to this potential paradox is that if you go back in time you go back to an alternate universe that is happening at the exact time you're going to, and anything you do changes that alternate universe, if you return, you return to your own universe and nothing is changed, or you go forward to the time point you left, but you do so in the alternate universe (and if you go back in time again, you go back to a third universe, which is a second alternate, and so on). |
