Sodastream's FAQ gives a price "Penguin and Crystal machine users will pay just $.40 per liter of premium sparkling water and as little as $.82 per liter of fresh gourmet soda."
I have no idea where they get that price. Let's see, a $5 bottle doing 12 liters is $0.41. The carbonation is costing a minimum $1 per liter, so I have no idea how they can get 82c, and that's not even counting in the price of the original starter kit. I think I discovered that the $60 price is for the device itself, refills are less, at around $30. But they're also expensive, you can get commercial carbonation (you have to have an adapter to use it with Sodastream, it uses a proprietary connector) and for the same price get 5 times as much. One example gave was that what they charge $30 for a CO2 refill, a fire station will refill CO2 for $10 and $20 from a liquor store, and you can get a 50 pound carbonation tank filled for not very much, and 50 pounds is a lot more than their large carbonator holds.
Also the carbonation doesn't last anywhere near as long as a commercial product, it'll go flat in about a day. |
