Alan Wake

The spiritual successor to Max Payne. Like MP, you play mostly for the atmosphere and clever narrative while the action gunplay is mostly a visual gimmick that quickly get repetitive. The story spends the entire time skating the fine line between brilliant and retarded. Right in the intro you're treated to a laugh out loud moment as Alan mentions Stephen King, followed immediately by a guy getting run over by a truck on a backwood nighttime road.

Also like Max Payne: familiarity with Twin Peaks is a big help.

Metro 2033

Only played about half an hour. The visuals are gorgeous. The post-apocalyptic surface is bleak Bleaker than 12 Monkeys meets The Road.

But the appeal of gorgeous visuals are dashed when they meet the framerate of STALKER. It's not even a performance issue. The engine just seems designed to skip every other frame. Very immersion killing, especially during gunfights. You'll miss half your shots against fast moving mutants simply because you can't smoothly aim at unsmooth animations. Not that it matters because it seems they balanced it out to compensate for this. A double immersion killer.

So again, if you're willing to put up with some meg gameplay for gorgeous atmosphere, then it's probably worth $5.
