I liked the idea of Half-Life 2's vehicles, but I hated the execution. You can't have turn left, turn right, accelerate and reverse all on the same analogue stick, it just doesn't work. How are you supposed to crank the wheel while maintaining speed? How are you supposed to change the direction your vehicle is facing at very low speeds, without accidentally throwing it (and more importantly, the camera!) into reverse? The latter is especially problematic when trying to maneuver in confined spaces or "unstick" yourself from scenery, something they were constantly asking you to do with the sewer boat. Arguably the lowest point in the entire Half-Life series, that was.
This wasn't a problem for those of us who played the game as originally intended: WASD never gave us those problems.
I'm so glad I bought the Half Life collector's edition back in '04. Such fun being introduced to Steam over my 56k modem, updating my BRAND NEW game for 1.5 hours before first play. |
