The Episode Two car was originally a Volkswagen Beetle, named "Jalopy". As stated by Valve's David Speyrer, that name says something about how uncool it was. Early feedback was that it seemed too similar to the Half-Life 2 Scout Car. The team decided to redesign it so that players would feel excited rather than disappointed when they saw the car. Alyx's original line when she first saw the Jalopy echoed the feelings of many early viewers: "What a wreck! Forget about White Forest... we'll be lucky if we make it to the end of the block."
I liked the idea of Half-Life 2's vehicles, but I hated the execution. You can't have turn left, turn right, accelerate and reverse all on the same analogue stick, it just doesn't work. How are you supposed to crank the wheel while maintaining speed? How are you supposed to change the direction your vehicle is facing at very low speeds, without accidentally throwing it (and more importantly, the camera!) into reverse? The latter is especially problematic when trying to maneuver in confined spaces or "unstick" yourself from scenery, something they were constantly asking you to do with the sewer boat. Arguably the lowest point in the entire Half-Life series, that was.
While I'm complaining about the Xbox 360 port of Half-Life 2, I'd just like to mention that the autosave doesn't get written to disk until you quit and return to the Orange Box lobby screen. If you think you can just press the "off" button on your controller when you've had about as much of this shit as you can take, prepare for a nasty surprise when you eventually go back. God help you if the game crashes and you haven't been manually saving via the pause menu. It's almost like whoever did the conversion had never actually used a games console before. |
