| The news announced that it was one year ago today that a nutcase shot up a Tucson, Arizona Safeway, killed six people, and wounded something like 15 or 20 others. And the guy is so whacked-out it looks like they won't be able to fry him because he's too crazy to even stand trial. This tragedy came from gun nuts and those who fail to recognize reality.
It's gun nuts who fail to realize that in a violent society with armed criminals, if the public is disarmed the criminals have the advantage. Arizona is a much more gun-favorable state but you still need a permit to concealed carry ("CCW permit"), even if it is a "shall issue" state (more on that below). And we fail to encourage people who are properly trained to go armed in public. A similar incident happened in a Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas a few years ago, and a number of diners were armed and could have done something, except they had to leave their weapons in their cars because state law prohibited bringing a weapon with you into a restaurant. I remember hearing how some guy tried to pull a stunt like this in a restaurant in Israel. He got off one or two shots before several diners shot him. Apparently he didn't know that in Israel, most people are allowed to be armed, a lot exercise that right. and a number, if they're off-duty military, they might still be carrying their sidearm. Would it have helped here? I don't know. But disarming people when criminals are armed is sheer folly. And places with "shall issue" CCW permits (or not-required-to-issue, where you can legally carry concealed without a permit, like Vermont), have lower violent crime rates than places where you have to be approved ("may issue") to get a CCW permit.
