The show leans very heavily on one structural gimmick: Kemp goes to shithole, learns about existence of a big bad underworld figure, and then negotiates with a series of gatekeepers to try and meet the big bad. It's a stupid contrivance to give the show a conventional arc, and it leads Kemp to give way too much credence to the criminals and security apparatchiks who form the bulk of the interview subjects and whose jobs involve lying professionally.
What the dumb arc doesn't undermine is the raw pathos of all the fucked up little vignettes that the production team encounters on their way to meet the big bad. There is nothing so slick on TV right now that gives so much face time to third worlders living through otherwise unimaginable stuff. At his best, Kemp is clearly conscious that he is completely out of his element, and so he just openly evinces his ignorance and invites all the crap happening around him to wash over him in an awesome wave. |
