I mean it's great if louis ck can make a living at this, but if you look at how much he spent getting it put together he didn't actually make enough money to pay for the next one and also his rent. Everyone else except maybe katt williams or the rednecks of comedy or maybe chapelle if he wants are going to have a tough time with this model, because making revenue on it requires both high popularity and high reputation with potential customers: popularity to get people to think about buying it, and reputation so they'll decide you're worth the effort. So it works for louis ck and I hope he does one every six months forever, but the 9th or 10th most popular/well-respected comedian who does it is going to go fucking broke.
Even if he started putting other comedians' shows on his site, he'll be the only one making money off it because having all that stuff in one place (sadly) reminds people that $5 x all the shit you'd like to watch adds up quickly. Some of us can afford it but other people have to choose between hobbies that all nickel and dime them (comics, rpgs, videogames, movies, etc)
1. This thing has to keep making money through the end of the month or even january to make it really worth it.
2. The next one has to do the same or preferably better and has to be within like six months to eliminate this one being something that people are only willing to treat as an "annual event"
3. Smaller audience guys like doug stanhope or kyle kinane would have to make decent money off one before the field could start to look at it as a valid thing to do with their career
I think maybe stand up comedy is a good place to test this since those guys can sell through both CD or DVD but don't tend to be tied up in 7 year multi-record contracts the way a band would, they could each take a year to experiment without fucking up their whole career. |
