Tron Legacy by fabio 10/30/2011, 2:37pm PDT
I'm not going to get into the quality of the original Tron, but at the very least it had an original look of what people pictured computers at the time, a time when computers were just starting to enter the mainstream but where still an unknown world to most people.

So what is the point of this sequel? No one under the age of 28 remembers computers or games looking anything like this, computers are ordinary everyday affairs now, and the idea that all this fantastical stuff taking place in 1989 hardware is quaint at best. As far as I can tell this is the first movie ever made based on the sole appeal of 30+ subculture males.

Whatever, cash in on nostalgia first, come up with a script second.

What a formulaic exercise. You can almost see Charlie Kaufman's idiot brother flipping through a Robert McKee book. There isn't a single aspect that isn't the laziest possible approach to coming up with a finished cash in product. At least the original made an effort to have people appear as though they weren't flesh and blood; here it's just people wearing spandex with a couple glow sticks glued on.

And the writing? Nothing is there because it makes sense for the story, but solely because the writers saw elements from previous movies and decided to ineptly copy them (is it any surprise this was done by Lost writers?). No attempt at all to at least try and tie it into computers. For all intents and purposes, this is a Vin Diesel movie with glow sticks glued on. From the pointless stunt filled start (the main character wants to undo the company board's decision and has the power to do so as majority share holder, but breaks in to sabotage the computer instead?) to finish, it follows the plot points of Babylon A.D., because that is a movie the writers saw before.

Main character must deliver special girl before arbitrary ticking clock in order that someone can change the nature of life and creation blah blah. There must be a gangster they go to for help, and a nightclub scene (programs unwind?) not because the story organically demands it, but because they were in a movie the writers saw before. Why is Michael Sheen doing a painful Clockwork Orange impression? Because it is a movie the writers saw before. Could it be that the assistant to the authority figure that no one's ever seen turns out to be the authority figure himself (nothing comes of this deception, it's just something the writers saw before)? Could it be that the oddly acting person the resistance said could be trusted ends up selling them out? Could the traitor proclaim "We had a deal!" to the villain before being killed? Could the mysterious masked man chasing them turn out to be the person from the "I never saw him again" mention?*

I won't say that it gets even more derivative than that, but at one point the main character is getting beaten up only to be saved when grey beard Jeff Bridges shows up in a hooded robe and scares the attackers off with a trick. Main character, grey beard robe, and special girl race to recover important technical data. Some laser swords are pulled out, hooded grey beard uses a mind trick to have a guard let him pass, the man in black armor turns out to be a former comrade of hooded grey beard, they all escape in a ship but are pursued by fighters so main character is told to man the turret, and finally hooded grey beard faces the villain as they try to escape but realizes that main character will never make a run for it so long as he's alive so he sacrifices himself.

* If those questions were too tough for you, here's a multiple choice one:

While manning the turret to shoot down enemy fights, which one of the following lines did the main character NOT say?

a.) "Get some!"
b.) "That's what I'm talking about!"
c.) "Have a nice swim!"
d.) "Ice to meet you!"
