Now that banks are required to charge merchants less in fees for transactions, they've decided to sock it to their customers by charging for using their check card in ways other than as an ATM card.
Bank of America has decided to impose a $5 a month service charge for use of its check card except at ATMs. I agree with the guy that said people should move to another bank. I had trouble with B of A a few years ago, when I opened an account with them, then discovered that I would be charged $15 a month for having an account. Since I already had one from BB&T that was free, I decided I no longer needed the services of B of A and closed the account.
Formerly, Banks were allowed to charge merchants circa 44c per transaction, but since they did nothing to take advantage of reduced communications service costs, this was reduced to 22c. So banks have decided, if they can't get it from the merchants, they'll get it from the customers.
I noticed back in the days that if you got a check card you could not get it with a "no overdraft" policy, the bank was incapable of preventing you from running an overdraft. I note that this inability suddenly vanished when the Fed said that if a bank gave you an unauthorized overdraft they couldn't collect on it.
