All I really remember about that game is it came out the same month as Fallout, and it just seemed like a big baby game for babies. I mean, you didn't even get to move your own guy! Hadn't these developers played Diablo, let alone X-COM? Even chess let you move your guys, and that was like the most primitive shit ever. Of course, at the time I'd never tried a JRPG before, and was still under the impression that Japanese cartoons were something adults only watched ironically (like the hipsters and their beloved Scooby Doo reruns), so I guess I must've been pretty fucking ignorant. I wonder if I'd be able to appreciate it more if I went back and tried it again today? There's no way it could've actually been worse than most of the garbage I was playing at the time. My most hotly-anticipated game of 1997 starred an FMV Erick Avari crudely composited into a series of CGI caves. Honest-to-God, CAVES. I wasted my teenage years so hard :( |
