I had a similar problem. The fan died on my power supply after making obnoxious whining sounds much akin to bad power steering. Then I didn't hear anything, and a couple of days later I'd start getting hard lock-ups after only 5-10 minutes of activity. I'm still using that PC right now with a replaced power supply, didn't kill anything.
