The Office Explanation:
At one point in the US version of The Office (which is a brilliant show by the way, much better than the UK version which I still have not seen past the pilot), Michael Scott, regional manager, gets asked by corporate what he's doing to have such a productive office. He has no idea because he's dumb. The answer is obvious to everybody watching though: it's the most productive office because they have Jim and Dwight, the two best salespeople in the company. It's not complicated.
Caltrops is great when great posters post. I'm not going to fag out and start naming names, but some of our best posters stopped posting. If you want to know what happened, find out why they stopped posting.
The "It's 2011" Explanation (I see that Gutsby just posted the same thing)
Forums are not as much of a thing as they were in 2001. Back then, if you wanted to talk about shit to people online, it was email or a message board.
Now, if you want to talk to a group of people online, that's called Facebook. If you just want to troll the earth, it's Twitter.
Additionally, Facebook and Twitter have trained people to not care about written things that are long. This is why Zseni's posts (which are frequently great) get no response from me. I know there's great stuff in there that merits a response, but I have been trained BY SOCIETY not to spend too much time breaking up a post bit-by-bit, because that would result in a response that itself is too long. For society. There are a couple of examples I can remember of posts that Zseni made where I still feel guilty and think "damn, she put some effort into responding to me and I did not respond, that is ill" but here we are.
The "Awareness of Mortality (I am not a manchild) Explanation"
I kind of tried to push people in this direction, (and maybe I'll still try!) but interests diverge over time. I was in college when I started posting here. Now I've been married for over 10 years, and I have a kid and a job and a yard and shit. This website is about video games. It's not like I think it's an immature hobby or anything, I just don't have as much time to play video games as I used to. I think a lot of posters kind of fell off for the same reason. And then no new posters came in to replace them because it's 2011 and who is going to... "join a forum?" Joining a forum is not a thing in 2011.

And the other question is, why does this forum still get read by the FoKs of the world? (Here I am standing in for the posters who are not capable of generating an interesting thread or having a particularly worthwhile contribution besides our appreciation of what's here.)
