Questions about Droid phones by Ice Cream Jonsey 03/20/2011, 1:32pm PDT
(You guys are the only people I trust.)

I dropped my 3G iPhone at the bathroom in Stranahan's distillery tour. The screen broke and splintered. So I have to get a new phone now. (Even if the screen didn't break, hitting the side of a distillery toilet means instant upgrade.)

I wrote that I had a positive experience with the iPhone a couple years ago. This isn't true - it was my first smartphone. Imagine if you had been playing games from the 70s your entire life and someone gave you BioShock 2. You'd think it was the best thing ever. That's what happened to me and the 3G.

The things I hated specifically about the iPhone are:

- iTunes

- There was no official way to do profiles. I had to jailbreak it for AutoSilent. Then AutoSilent had a bug for months where everything would be silenced on a schedule except text messages. I only had my phone make sounds for mail, calls and text messages, so you can see how that would be frustrating.

Actually, the lack of profiles is singularly amazing. Yes, the iPhone has a button you can press to make it go completely silent. You'd think just remembering to toggle it before and after work would be nice. But I can't remember to do that. I can't be alone, and I just don't understand how Apple employees live with their phones this way. I guess it's not considered embarrassing if your phone makes a sound at a meeting. "Welp, Steve wanted it this way!" So fucking stupid.

- You couldn't skin it, put your own wallpaper up nor change the ring and text tones without either FTPing into the phone, or jailbreaking it. I don't have time for this nonsense.

- AT&T's service in Colorado is a whole other thing. It made the device not a phone.

- The iPhone having just a single physical button is stupid hipster nonsense.

- The iPhone does a thing where hitting its single button loads the search page. There is no way to turn this off. Countless times I hit the thing's lone button to close an app, nothing happens, I hit it again, and then both button presses register, bringing me not to the main menu but the search page. When this happens multiple times a day it becomes maddening.

My questions for anyone with a droid:

- Is there a program for profiles? I need to be able to tell my phone "shut up between 9 and 7."
- How much of a pain in the ass is it going to be to get a new ring tone on it?
- Is there even a concept of "hacking" it? Is it pretty easy to transfer files over to it?

Death to AT&T, I will never give them money again, I guess I will go with Verizon this time, but any carrier is OK.
