My friend set up a Minecraft serverby Bananadine 03/04/2011, 8:13pm PST
I guess the multiplayer aspect of the non-free version has worked for a while now. It was really fun to get on and wreck his house in front of him and then punch him off the side of it into some water and then run off to chop down some cacti. I didn't really have a reason to chop down the cacti, they were just there. Then I wandered around and built my equipment up, the way you have to do when you enter a new world in Minecraft, and while I was doing that I found a giant empty column in the land, where the map-generation system had failed to finish its work. It was open from sky to sky (there's sky below the world) and there were cows bobbing across it somehow. But I was afraid to jump in because I had a lot of good items. So I carefully dug a spiral stairway all the way down it, just outside the empty space, for exploratory purposes. Then I climbed back up and had to build a huge tower and tell my friend to also build a huge tower, so that I could find his base again because I'd completely lost my way before discovering the big hole. It worked and I guided him to the hole and we put a little base next to it and explored it some more. It turned out that a player jumping in would also bob across it, cowlike. After a while the hole finally filled itself in and then there wasn't much more to do but play regular Minecraft, which I was already tired of, or cooperatively build something, which isn't much fun because we are grown-ups and we can do better than just stacking blocks into crude voxel sculptures in which maybe there are some doors that open and close automatically and some lights that flash or something, and that is still most of what you're supposed to do in this game. Oh and you can build the portals to hell, and we did build some, but they don't work yet in multiplayer worlds; they just sit there and look eldritch and make funny sounds. So I guess I'm mostly done with multiplayer Minecraft, until Minecraft guy's company gets around to letting you get to hell.
