That's great! Level 2-2 contains the boss demon that will allow you to speak to the blacksmith in 2-1 about the real upgrades in the game. I would not upgrade anything above +3 without doing that first or at least looking at upgrade paths on the wiki.
The magistrates (flame guys) are huge assholes, but since a flame resistant shield is a great idea for 2-2 anyway, you might want to consider getting the Purple Flame Shield from the Dragon's lair in 1-1 first as it will soak 90% of flame damage and 100% of physical damage (note: requires str 24 and other stats, so it might need a little power-leveling, but you should be in good shape after 1-1,2-1 (that bow will come in handy!),1-2 (kill the red with a boatload of magic missiles that you hand aim using the FPS view of the bow, just aim with the bow, then unequip without moving the camera; make sure you pick up the short compound bow but don't necessarily waste effort upgrading it since the compound long bow is easily accessible in 4-1). In my opinion, Spear trumps rapier every time thanks to the increased reach while still being the most powerful weapon that can still keep a shield guard up (the one in 1-2 is easily accessible once you smoke the red dragon, and he'll also be out of your way in 1-1 if for some reason you couldn't get around his fire).
2-2 is a soul-crushing experience for many thanks to the tunnels. There is a shortcut, but it's a leap of faith (in that the darkness limited draw distance just allows you to see the next perch). There is a gecko nest at the end of a long tunnel with two red NPCs in it. Consider reading up on gecko spawns and potentially waiting until you have Rage of God or Pillars of Fire before going after it.
3-1 is sublime, though. If any level starts to bring you down...this one really drives home the survival horror element.
