The new criteria is stuff you can d/l that's worth seeing, but I'm including cop things for you.
I think that downloading shows changes what's fun to watch, some programs are awesome and have really rich dense writing that gets kind of wasted if you have to watch them in pieces as they get preempted by sports over and over. A show like farscape got beat up a bit by scifi and I didn't see it til someone loaned me the dvds years later, it's great. it has that weird australian fallouty perspective and humor, which is why there aren't any shows like it now.
Gutsby's recommendation for Breaking Bad is dead on that show is an awesome crime spree. just get it all and watch it now so you'll be caught up for the next season (next year?)
He mentioned In Treatment, that show is also awesome but it takes real work to watch it. The structure is weird (30 minute therapy sessions, 5 patients a week). It's so accurate to being in therapy that if you haven't been it's meaningless and if you have been it fucks with your head. Worth it, though.
Did you see Deadwood because that show is fantastic even with the old west setting
In the 'better as a block' category that show Rome is perfect to watch through over a weekend or 2
If you want a fucked up cop thing you could do worse than Dexter it's based on this book Darkly Dreaming Dexter about a serial killer who works for the police department. it stars Michael C. Hall as a guy acting circles around the rest of the cast. His little sister is so exactly like mine they couldn't have gotten it more right if she lived right where they shot it and my old friends from high school all had bit parts in the show oh wait
Another fucked up cop thing is The Shield which is over but if you didn't see it just download the first two seasons and ignore that they're trying too hard to shock people
Outside of long dramas I expect you've already seen venture brothers but if you haven't it's pretty much written for people who barely remember the 80s and is the most fun thing to watch
There was a fucking hilarious show called Archer on FX that had one short season and will have another one next year
I saw a bit of boardwalk empire but it's so new it's hard to tell if it will be good. I've been watching The Glades and it's too simple to be ranked with like great modern tv, but it's funny to see this character go through the same thing everyone does when they move to south florida and have to deal with everyone around them pretending to be stupid |
