I didn't play Legend, I think the only one I played was the old Nintendo title maybe.
Steam had all three of them for $35 so I grabbed it. Turn-based hex map tactics game with two extra moves per turn: your spellbook and your pet dragon's abilities. There are very few area effect anything and the combat is reasonably challenging. You have to change up your tactics because you chew through units and the vendors run out of reups, you need to make constant progress in the game or you don't get new vendors.
The advancement has a nice balance to it, you can't just spam fireballs or your dragon doesn't get exp, you don't want to just spam dragon attacks because he can find treasure on the combat grid (like $10k per try on the third island), you can't dawdle all day with the combat because they chip away at your valuable missile units.
The enemy AI isn't brilliant but it knows how to use a hex map, to close on missile units to shut them down, to hang back with its own artillery and chip away at you.
The description of the game says there's an editor so if there ends up being a critical mass of players you could see some really creative stuff.
Because of the lack of area-effect options I wouldn't compare it directly to FFT so far, it's kind of like the old Bandit Kings of Ancient China games, or even 4e Dungeons and Dragons: one shot special powers, precious few dominant offensive units, and AI that shows both Elemental and Civ V where they went wrong. |
