The left and center channels on my 12-yo Denon receiver are dead. Frankly, I never liked this thing anyway (UI sucks, 5 seconds of clunk-clunk every time you change any parameter, noisy fan, no bass/treble controls) so I'll take what I would spend on repair and buy something smaller instead. I will use the new one only to play music through my laptop, so it doesn't need a remote. Bass/treble and 2 or 3 sources would be nice but are not required.
Speakers are Paradigm 9se, they are pretty efficient (91 or 93dB/W @ 1m depending on who I believe) and I have a separate powered sub. I am thinking something like 30Wpc? I don't even know how much power I need! It seems like this should cost much less than $200.
What I've found are various products from Pyle, which cite 1% THD and people say sound like ass, and the Nuforce Icon, which would be perfect except: 12Wpc, RJ45 speaker terminals(?!), $250. I could get a used NAD or something for that price. There are also tons of search results for one-piece 15Wpc "kits" that are just a tiny circuit board and a big heat sink, you add your own volume knob and DC power supply. Is this a good idea?
The audio review industry is, of course, even more corrupt than the PC one, so I need your help, Caltrops!
