| Actually you already have service, so all you really need is to transfer your line to your own account. Are you already paying for data? If not, go into a store with your WS, he'll show his DL and approve for you to take over his number, they will run your credit and do the transfer. Don't bring out or mention your Blackberry and everything should be fine. Lowest plan is $40/month for 450 minutes. (There is also a hidden plan for $30/month but there's only 200 minutes, no rollover or mobile-to-mobile, only 1000 N&W minutes, and it's called the "Senior Nation Plan" so they likely wouldn't add it even if it was a good idea.) Show them an older cellphone and ask them how much it would be to add data for this because (only if they ask) your Blackberry was stolen and you can data it for $15/month. There is a chance that this rate no longer works with Blackberries at all or that they will force you to sign up for a higher data rate a few months in, but most likely it will be fine.
Keep in mind that carriers generally match pricing, and right now the thing is to force anyone who wants a shiny new device to sign up for a higher data or texting rate so I think you're better off where you are at. And there is always prepaid, which tends to be more expensive but if your IM or web browsing is minimal and your voice usage is nonexistent you can get away with 200 min & 100 MB/month for $40, assuming as above that the data plan works for a Blackberry. |
