AVC: You said you aren’t interested in just killing people off. With movies like The Final Destination, viewers are literally just waiting to see who dies next, and in what elaborately gruesome way. It’s almost pornographic and by the way this interview is taking place in February, 20 fucking 10.
It is an okay interview, though. I used to get excited about how computers and cell phones were the antidote for tired old horror movie scenarios and how Hollywood will need to get creative in order to cook up something new to scare us with, but then they completely solved that problem by shoehorning a scene into every fucking movie where someone stops to look directly into the camera and recite "THERE'S NO CELL PHONE SIGNAL HERE" and yaaaaaay we're back in the 1950's and this will never get old and they'll never have to come up with any new ideas.
Having said that, I guess they tried a few other ways to solve it. One is lazy "you wake up in a torture chamber with no phone". Another is silly "the cell phone IS the killer". The third is okay "everyone's a zombie so who could you even call" but we can't keep making post-apocalyptic movies forever.
Surely there's got to be a way to create a horror movie without writing off ubiquitous technology. Probably something about loss of identity like Kafka's Metamorphosis or Wittgenstein's Face/Off where even though you can call for help nobody recognizes you anyway.
