Alan Moore once wrote something about attempting to start your story by getting sympathy from the audience. Okay, I don't have the Watchmen in front of me, but it's in there somewhere.
There were a lot of video game enemies I hated much more than the Big Daddies of BioShock, and this was probably due to the fact that they can be avoided for most of the game. They also had a nice arc, like how in Fallout 3, Mister Burke comes back and shoots you in the face at the end. The splicers ARE in my personal top ten of hated villains, so to see a Daddy go up against three of them in the intro movie initially seemed like it was going to be a lot of fun.
Until the tough splicer throws the blue ball at you. All of a sudden it's not so much fun any more, because you know what's eventually coming.
The electricity doesn't hurt the Big Daddy at all, but yeah - the blue ball means that this splicer is going to represent "us" from the first game. They confirm that with a dude coming with a lead pipe (the wrench for people bad at plumbing and easily frustrated, haha, eat ass, retard!). But you know the green ball is coming, and the camera turns and the dude has it in his hand, and --
There's better "acting" with the hypnotized Big Daddy reluctantly holding the gun than most video games ever get in their entire playthrough. More, it sets you up with a sense of dread when the scene shifts and you get to play - there's no way you don't eventually fight a splicer with the same power, and he could be coming at any moment. I assume they will draw it out, because they're amazing game designers. All told, this is one of the best opening movies I've ever seen.
Of course, that was all I could see of the game this morning, since Steam completely fucked me and I have a job. I was able to get it to start downloading at 7:00 PM when I got home last night, and it had 25% to go at midnight. Fuck you, Steam. Fuck, fuck you. But whatever, it was sad and predictable and maybe they'll fix it some day so the people who pre-paid legitimately in the manner that gave them the most profit won't be the last fucking people on Earth to actually get to play it.*
I'm not going to read anything more until I've finished the game, but I'm really pumped.

*I love how Valve will pull every piece of information about your computer, every metric as to when you played, where you stopped, and when you uninstalled a game, and every other slimy piece of data mining they can possibly dream up, but they won't have Steam automatically start downloading a game when its turned on. |
