The editor itself is basically identical to what it was 10 years ago, so all the drawing and texturing commands are the same, as well as 4 windows for editing. However rather than drawing couches and bathtubs and shit, you can just place an entity into the world and pick from a dropdown list to say YOU ARE A COUCH and a couch model appears. You can also use Google's Sketchup to make your own 3D models to import which is kind of an awesome idea, but I haven't bothered to try to do anything with it (HMM). The other nice thing is that Valve has a pretty good wiki going with a mapping tutorial and common character and world dimensions.
Well also so I heard, if you placed a dude in the map it would actually show up on the 3D view, instead of it being some rectangular box.
Plus in the old days you couldn't make bumpy terrain without making a bunch of giant ass brushes that would stick out of the ground and potentially slow the game down. It also wouldn't allow brushes to have vertexes pulled out at odd angles because that would just crash the compiler and possibly the map editor. But in the Source one apparently there's just a tool to automatically shape the ground so you can add indents and pools and stuff at will.
When I think about this it's tempting to remake that blastcorpse map with the additions and changes I made because boy it was cool. The only thing is that texturing is probably still the hardest part, because that takes the most work, making sure it's shaped right and aligned properly to each face, but then if you just add a prefab all that shit should be done automatically. I remember even if you put a prefab in back then, if you moved it anywhere, the texture would have to be realigned because it aligned the texture with the map space itself instead of the object. |

Hammer still sucks but most levels are mainly built using prefabs these days. NT by Gutsby 09/25/2009, 2:12pm PDT
