but you're taking my comment as though I diagrammed the characters and labelled Draper "antagonist." I merely recognize that he is no dashing heartthrob I wish I could meet; he is an attractive, beautifully described Bad Man who is best witnessed at a fictional distance. wouldn't want anyone to chalk up attraction to him as proof that chicks love jerks.
Don and Betty: the most interesting thing about them is not the soap opera you bristled about in the other forum. it is that when you scratch the surface they are flawlessly matched: she is his precise female counterpart.
- beautiful: check, check.
- obsessed with appearances: check, check.
- prizing personal dignity: check, check.
- reserved to the point of unknowability: check, check.
...and yet Betty is disdained and summons nowhere near the sympathy Don evokes, and it's not just because of lack of screen time. though we get more peeks at his underside, it is also because he's a man who completely inhabits His World. they are not just comparable, they are twins (possibly especially as regards prizing freedom, making Betty that much more pitiable) and it's fascinating to see how different societal roles mold the 'same' person.
anyway.
to your question, I think of all the characters, the most "good" is Peggy. or Sal.
Joan is in the running but trends a bit too far towards martyr. but I fucking hate martyrs, so. |
