Technical Readouts were way less balance-disrupting than, say, 2nd ed D&D's Complete * Handbook franchise.

A friend of mine pointed out that part of the problem is that they started with all these existing mech models and made up configurations for them. As a result, a lot of the original (stolen) mechs had lots and lots of tiny guns, which turned out to be a disadvantage. With a couple of lucky exceptions (Battlemaster, Warhammer) these were all easily outmatched with mechs that people made up, allowing them to be optimized for the rule system (fucking Hunchback).
