Yeah, I've been staring at that thing this whole time. Basically, anything that runs will run it up to 99%. Steam opening up runs it up to 99%. Opening an audio file will run it up to 99%. Running a virus scan: 99%. It's like I'm missing all my CPU headroom.
The defrag is at 9% after 2 hours... that may be a clue as to what the problem is. I hope so, anyways.
Starting Steam and running a virus scan would peg things bad normally, and defragging takes fucking forever. Here's a question - is defragging causing the thing to spike to 99% (while its running, not right at the beginning)? Also, disable your antivirus software and see if things are still spiking all over when you open them.

I don't have any background virus scan going... defragging made it bounce all over but it didn't generally pin it. This sounds dumb, but could it have anything to do with the fact that when I plugged in my new PSU I didn't use all the case fans I used before (I dropped one because the PSU had an extra)?
It was fragmented like a motherfucker but it's not now and the problem is still there.
My video card is on the same IRQ (16) as 3 USB controllers. Significant? |
