I liked Jacob's Ladder. :( (spoilers continue) by Fullofkittens 01/19/2005, 7:37am PST
It came out a long time before Sixth Sense and it was the first movie I ever saw with the "already dead" twist. Now that Already Dead is the standard ending for a ghost movie it's not a good ending, but it was a good ending at the time.

The fact that 'Nam was vaguely involved in the hallucinations kind of dilutes the whole thing a bit. There looked like there was going to be some X-Files-type conspiracy going on, but wait, no, you can't believe anything you saw, he made it all up. At the time I was kind of thrilled about the various interpretations that could be read into what happens, but no, actually there's really only one and as you say it's now the standard ghost ending.

Still, I really appreciate the movie for providing a really interesting and creepy interpretation of what purgatory is like: just like your real life except with shadowy people chasing you and reptilian monsters assfucking your girlfriend on the dancefloor. Once you know the secret, the movie isn't as good anymore, but the creepiness of the individual scenes lingers.
