| I hear people loving Master of Magic a lot. Never played it but the Fall from Heaven guys claim it's a big inspiration.
Fall from Heaven 2 is a Civ 4 Beyond the Sword mod putting the game in a fantasy setting. More than cosmetic changes, it completely alters the play style. Instead of two traits and one unique unit, each Faction now have totally different mechanics that alter your play, such as one side that can construct a wonder that permanently puts them at war with everyone, but allows them to build a second wonder that summons a 60 strength god unit (Master of Magic?). The second catch to that is another player randomly receives a magic sword that automatically kills your god if it ever comes into combat against him. Lots of stuff like that. Religions also have drastic differences that change your play style. Assassin units that target the weakest unit in an enemy stack. Armageddon counter that goes up when the evil religion spreads or a city is razed. Crazier shit happens the higher it goes (the demon faction's whole goal is to get it to max, at a certain point they can cast a spell that brings one of the three best cities in the world with their religion over to their control). 2 separate councils for good/neutral or neutral/evil players that pass resolutions. Fund dissent in the opposing council's cities. Form a pact that you can only trade tech with fellow members. Iron and copper now confer bonuses to all military units instead of being prerequisites. They're still important, but no more getting totally hosed without them pitting your archers and warriors against axemen and swordsmen. I got bored with Civ 4 a while ago, but I'm having a blast with this (5 hours gone!). Their 2 main goals were replayability with completely different mechanics for factions, and end game events (armageddon, god summoning) to break the late game deadlock grind. Highly recommended. I'd totally be up for a multiplayer game. |
