We're learning something about the nature of national security! It is a tight life-resistant seal through which beauty cannot creep.
It's always interesting to discover (DA NE) what can and can't permeate into the upper echelons: bible quotes, yes. Aesthetic feeling, no. The heads of companies with useful information or products, yes. Commoners, or those merely interested, no. Houseplants, yes. Wild animals, no. 90-degree angles, alphabetical filing systems even if the categories make no sense, solid wood furniture: yes. Satin, disorderly folders, whimsical seating: not where they can be seen, certainly.
In all things and all ways, the overall feeling is: the mitigation of risk, or even uncertainty of any kind. Heavy permanence into which an individual person positions himself like a pilot strapping into a jet.
Art is risky, Fussbett! Bad cover designs accomplish something important that good ones couldn't: they relieve their creators of any suspicion of being unreliable, sensitive, inefficient. The whole shebang is incomprehensible to guys who like to paint, fuck, and play. Likewise, sexy music, interesting clothes, boardgames less than 500 years old, and Powerpoint slides that don't crush your pupils are all filled, in these highly classified mausoleums, under D for Damn Hippies. |
