I stopped after the scene where the weak actors are having drunken heart to heart talks about their families after a harrowing (but bonding) day in the field, otherwise known as an interminable sniper duel. The asshole protagonist squad leader (crazy, maybe suicidal, but he gets results) finally endears himself to the squad by... staying cool under fire and giving a juice pack to the other guy when clearly the protagonist needed the juice more. When the chips are down, he really cares for his men, see. Clichés are piling up faster than bodies, whether it's counting the days to retirement, shooting a gas tank to set a car ablaze, guns jamming or cowardly superior officers. The doctor just asked to ride with the bomb squad, a break from sitting behind a desk all day. I predict bad things for either him or the guy he's treating!
Both Generation Kill and Blackhawk Down fucking destroy The Hurt Locker, but admittedly maybe I'm docking it too much for being silly when comparing it to "based on a true story". But on the other hand, weren't there enough IED stories in Iraq to base this on a true story as well? |
