Black Hawk Down is a love letter to guns and plans going to hell, which I respect deeply, but I never thought it was quite as exciting as you'd expect given its visceral 50-bullets-a-minute action. For the better part of The Hurt Locker the movie feels unpredictable and the characters are oddly sympathetic. Whereas BHD spends most of its time under fire, jumping between squads, blasting untrained militias to pieces from behind cover, The Hurt Locker actually forces its heroes to walk slowly right into what would be a perfect ambush with only their eerie fatalism and a nervous guy with an M4 as backup. In this day of asymmetric warfare you rarely get to see the parts in which the odds feel heavily stacked against the teched-out first-world soldiers, and The Hurt Locker delivers in spades when it comes to exactly that. Very tense stuff. |
