This is all with the caveat that I haven't played D1 in years.

#1: Should I be ditching my Ninja for an Elite Ninja?! My Ninja is my favorite guy!
As a general rule, you want to wait until an upgrade 2-3 levels above your existing class is available. That will minimize the grinding time but still keep you on track with the significant benefits of reincarnation. The more you use a class, the faster you should reincarnate them. By ditching you do mean reincarnating, right, not deleting. Don't let all of that delicious mana go to waste. All of the Disgara games have a number of exploit levels you can abuse to easily get weak newborn characters on track. For the main plot, though, you are unlikely to need a lot of reincarnation to get through it. It's definitely one of the core strategic dimensions of the game once you decide to devote all of your free time to it.
#2: What's the deal with Item Specialists? If I subdue them do they then level up as I level up the item?
IIRC, their level is fixed at the level (floor of item world) you subdue them at. Then you get more of the same kind and combine them to increase the specialist's level. Keep in mind they are combined for good, so if you are not going to spend a lot of time there you might be fine spreading a few around.
What is the right way to handle the Item World? Is it worth the trouble to level up shit you can't even equip just to move the specialists off of those items?
You do not need the item world apart from some brief 1-10 stints on key items (emblems, weapons for crucial characters, etc) for the core game. The item world is mainly essential for the post game. It's up to you how much you want to get involved, but if you're not petitioning the Dark Assembly for harder difficulties you should be fine without it for the main game.
#3: My rogue has a 1% chance to steal an item. How do I raise this percentage? Just by leveling up?
I believe the key variable is the type of "hand" you have equipped them with. Then, their Hit % will combine with the Hand Hit % (as if it were a weapon) and allow you to steal with that chance. I believe Hands are consumed after a successful theft, so it's worth it to have a couple on hand if you are robbing someone with a lot of stuff or planning on going deep in the item world.
#4: Is Disgaea 2 any good? I get the sense that the DS Disgaea is just Disgaea on the DS, which would be great...?
Disgaea 2 is the peak of the series, mechanics wise. Every layer it adds to the gameplay feels interesting and useful, and most of all, accessible. However, the plot and presentation of the 1st make it the definitive one that is a must play for newcomers to the series. |
