Re: Personal Ads for Objectivists

I think that Bioshock can easily be read either way. You can (as you seem to have) read the collapse of rapture as an inevitable consequence of its founding "principles", or you can read the collapse as the result of Ryan's abandoning his ideal free society in favor of a police state in the face of adversity. It seems clear that this was intended to let the designer(s) have it both ways, which just goes to show how firm in their convictions Rand fans are.
That's cool. I had never considered the possibility that BioShock was throwing Ryan there under the bus, for freaking out when the shit started to hit the fan. But yeah, that makes sense. I was obviously thinking along the lines of: - Ryan builds Rapture, which is to be a Randian paradise - The designers of BioShock fill it with the same horrible people you see (generally speaking; I'm sure there are some perfectly pleasant objectivists on this forum) advocating it on the Internet today - The inevitable happens when all those people are thrown together But yeah, the game being a lesson on what happens when a guy like Ryan compromises, or turns into a fascist or whatever - that's fine, too. It really is the best game I've played in years, on many levels. While trying to remember Sukhov's name, I hit the Wikipedia article for BioShock, which says that originally, the game was going to feature a protagonist/player that was a cult deprogrammer:
a person charged with rescuing someone from a cult, and mentally and psychologically readjusting that person to a normal life.[43] For example, Ken Levine cites an example of what a cult deprogrammer does: "[There are] people who hired people to [for example] deprogram their daughter who had been in a lesbian relationship. They kidnap her and reprogram her, and
This is a really good idea for a game, as long as they keep the lesbian part. If Ken Levine doesn't make this game in the next 15 years, I'm stealing it, much like how the Gravitron 2 guy stole the idea of putting Choplifter together with Gravitar when the original parties involved couldn't get their schedules sorted out to do it themselves.
