Re: Obligatory Monty link

With Korean dominance of Starcraft as a shining example of the high end and obnoxious 12 year olds who memorize every multiplayer level in Halo as the low end, even people with few Real Life reasons not to game as often as they like feel diminishing returns when playing a video game turns into the equivalent of a varsity level sport, with all of the baggage that comes with that.
Or you could not play ladder games. Video games flatten the amateur/professional dichotomy, because the best players in the world are playing on the same servers as the worst players in the world. Maybe there's not enough being done to ensure that amateurs get to enjoy their amateur status, but also: even amateurs get their asses kicked a lot by other amateurs in amateur sports. Even in Little League, there are teams that win and teams that lose. I dunno, maybe it's me. I used to watch my brother clear servers out in Quake 2 - he never got kicked, he was obviously not cheating, but he would just play everyone else under the table and they would get their video game turned into the equivalent of a varsity level sport with all of the baggage that comes with that. (He was 12 at the time?) But the people he played just went to other servers. I like to play WoW PVP from level 40-59, but not below (where twinks live) or above (where raid gearhogs live.) Some fucking idiot on Caltrops informed me that I was playing the game wrong because I liked to play PVP at any level but level 70, which is the "real game." I don't want to play at 70! Because I don't want to do raids all the time. I want to play at 49, where nobody has a full kit of Tier 1,000,000,000 gear. I lose when the point of the game is to get the best gear, and I win when the point of the game is to love the taste of blood. People who hate it when I just fucking own them over and over again have the option of levelling past my window! Or staying below it. Better gear beats Zseni every time! But Funny Arcade Man wasn't saying "I hate having to lose." He was saying "I hate having to try." Because even now you can play Starcraft games against non-Korean opponents, Quake 2 games against non-Zseni's Brother opponents, and WoW PVP against non-Zseni opponents. I'm guessing that his time-to-suck bar is set rather lower than Korean Starcraft Emerges and he gets pissy as soon as his kills are at -1. My totally correct hatred for this dude is intensified by his intense personal involvement with video games. He writes the most famous webcomic in the world about them! He goes to cons for them! He HAS BEEN PART OF THE VIDEO-GAME-MAKING PROCESS! And he just can't stand it when the professionals move in! The pre-professional phase of the game is dominated by ignorance and luck. He freely admits that this is the reason why he likes it. That's contemptible. Monty Cantsin was right about guys like that; if anything, he was too generous.
