Re: my condescending attitude?

Oh you have no idea how badly I wanted SS2 to work, and still do. But it doesn't, so it sucks once the atmosphere wears off and you realize it's just beating things with a wrench while running around fixing things with the game telling you "CAN'T USE THAT! NOT ENOUGH SKILLZ!" every few minutes. Atmosphere was the ONLY thing this game had going for it, and the respawning/gay arbitrary skill system ruined that.
Well, that's the rub- it was tapping into ideas from other games (like Shadowrun, which I like returning to) that feature both a lot of atmosphere and skill-based development. The problem was that (as the SA guy said) integrating that into FPS gameplay is a BITCH, and it didn't work as well as it could. I'm convinced there are ways it could have been made to work: longer-lasting weapons, respawning from fixed "creature generators" that you could turn off, giving "marine" characters basic proficiency in every kind of weapon and other professions basic proficiency in pistols and melee, more generous skill points, allowing for hacking of robot "pets" akin to what you find in MMORPGs, etc. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. (You know what's funny? If they had simply cribbed the hacking minigame from Shadowrun, modernized the graphics, and replaced the purchase of better decks and programs with stuff/buy/make along the way, it could have worked really well, in a way that System Shocks' system never pulled off. Pity.)
