Re: Shooting

Here's a litmus test to see which game you'd prefer: did you love the Bomb da Base mission in GTA3 (cover 8 ball with the sniper rifle while he blows up the freighter) and wish the whole game was like that? If yes, you'll like Vice City more. If you hated it, stick with GTA3.
Granted that I'm not terribly far into the game (I'm a few missions past stealing the tank) but so far, there's only been one mission like that Bomb da Base mission. That was where I was running around town sniping people. I had a mission where I shot the hell out of people from a helicopter and one where I shot the hell out of people from a boat. If you take those together, then you have three missions kinda like that. The rest seemed to be pretty simillar to the GTA3 missions. I heard there are a lot of race-type missions comming up. In other words, I think your litmus test sucks. One question, though. Why are there humvees in Vice City in the 80s?
There's a lot of shooting people while on a boat/helicopter missions. The whole "shooter on rails" thing was novel back when I first played Rebel Assault, but I'm ready to move on. There are also a lot of shooting on foot missions. Mother FUCK that one where you have to save Vance. There are shitty racing missions also, plus a boat racing mission.
But the Vance mission is a great example of the GREAT mission, and a great example of why your anti-gun skew is completely fanatical. Rescuing Vance is completely COMPLETELY different from Bomb Da Base and rail shooters. Yeah, you're on foot a lot, but no one seems to mind this as much as you. Furthermore you start off in a car (diving out of your flaming car to send the explosive projectile into the first wave of baddies is a great way to start that mission) and [SPOILERS] after rescuing Vance there is a really great car chase to the hospital. What's your beef with this mission? The fact that you have to leave the car at all?
I saw shooting as a quick diversion on your way from car to car. The game is called Grand Theft Auto. When I have to run around for more than 5 minutes doing it, it gets old. Sure as hell doesn't beat a 4+ star police chase.
If they removed all shooting from the game, then you'd instead be defending Vice City against the legion of people complaining that they made it TOO CRAZY TAXI.
Fuck those people. I guess it would be Crazy Taxi if Crazy Taxi had police chases, exploding cars, people you could run over, flips, vehicle and terrain damage, etc.
GTA3: No diving, no cycles, no helicopters, no car melee damage, no tire damage, easier cops (insta-bust), no rappelling heli-SWAT. Vice City has lots to offer over just the soundtrack.
Melee car damage was a quaint little feature that I never touched after the mission that taught you how to use it. Since they were already paying five trillion dollars for the soundtrack royalties, why couldnt they make the boats and helicopters infinately cooler by having them play the Magnum PI and Miami Vice themes (respectively)? Mission in GTA3 where you have to pick up Luigi's hookers and drop them off at the Police Ball. Stole a cop car and loaded three of them into it. Time was running out so I hit the siren because I had an emergency shipment of hookers that HAD TO GET THROUGH. Swerved, hit a bump, flew over it barrel rolling and landed on another hooker, crushing her. Crawled out of the flaming wreck KABOOM OH GOD NOT THE HOOKERS! Vice City did not have hooker carpooling. LOSE
