Re: Update

Manly I'm figuring I'd like to be able to sell something around $2,000 to $5,000 worth, which would definitely have made it worth the effort. Might even do better than that but I'll take what I can get.
Real talk: you will never make a single cent from this project.
So what you are saying is that even with putting out a demo version to give people a taste of the full game, putting up say a Facebook page, possibly buying $30 or $40 worth of search engine ads at 2c per hit, and despite the fact the game will support 5 additional languages in addition to English, that the game has 96 levels and costs $4.95. I cannot expect, <i>in the entire world</i>, to sell even 400 copies? You know, maybe I should just forget it. I've had plenty of practice writing programs for free, I have lots of other things I can do with my time than waste it creating and publishing a game that won't produce a dime in profit.
Frankly I will be amazed if it ever runs on a machine other than the one it was compiled on.
Oh please. I have four computers in addition to the one I am compiling it on, you think I won't do an install on all of them? I have machines running XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Plus I have the Macintosh to test it on for Mac compatibility. Since Free Pascal runs on Linux, I can release a version for that at the same time.
But you should still do it!
Yeah, waste my time and effort on a game that produces no profit. Really great productive use of my time.</sarcasm>
It sounds like a fun project you will learn a lot from, and I'm interested to read more about your progress and discoveries along the way.
That ain't makin' me no money, fella.
My advice is to try to enjoy the journey and learn some things, rather than fantasizing about monetary rewards that will never ever ever materialize.
I've been writing programs probably for longer than you've been alive (34 years). I have lots of other fun things to do than to take the time and effort to work on a project that has no possibility of returning any money for the amount of time I spent on it. I took a program someone else wrote, converted it from Delphi to Free Pascal, then made some modifications and sold it to ICJ as a program to create mazes in an adventure game. I got paid $70 for about 3 hours work, which isn't bad (considering I desperately needed the money at the time),. If I can't even do considerably better on a mass-market application, there is no point going through the agony and effort for no reward at all.
But hey that's just my opinion :)
Let me ask you, how many programs have you sold or tried to sell? How much experience do you have either as a staff or freelance programmer? How much marketing experience do you have?
