I should've brought up Capcom vs. SNK instead of Marvel vs. Capcom 2
MvC2 used a simple tag system where you picked a team of any three (totally outrageous) characters from a roster of 56, each of whom fell into one of three rock-paper-scissors-esque classes (projectile guys shot down strong guys, strong guys beat down fast guys, fast guys rushed down projectile guys - the old archers/infantry/cavalry dynamic applied to Street Fighters). CvSNK used the novel and quickly abandoned Ratio System, which the Fighting Game Community hated because it wasn't balanced on a razor's edge, it was just really neat. You got four slots to fill on your team; pansy-ass schoolgirls like Sakura took up one slot, generic martial artists like Ryu took up two slots, and big bad bosses like me, M. Bison, took up a whopping three slots. Capcom neutered the Ratio System in the very next release (Capcom vs. SNK 2? Haha, of course not), Capcom vs. SNK Pro, by allowing you to choose whatever ratio you wanted for whichever character you wanted and scaling their hit points and damage output accordingly. The original CvSNK remains to this day the only Street Fighter in a which a 100-pound Yogi found himself at a disadvantage when going up against a 300-pound Thai kickboxer. Or, more accurately, the only Street Fighter in which that disadvantage was a deliberate thematic choice instead of a slight incidental imbalance (oh capcpom can't you do anything right *sigh* *sigh* *sigh* etc. until I want to stab their stupid fan forum in its eyes). At least Capcom vs. SNK 2 added a playable Freddie Mercury.
