What does the GalCiv franchise have to offer that others don't? I'm curious.
I know it's not the prettiest 4x, that's for sure, and I know it's not going to be potentially extraneous but fun features like 3d tactical space combat (take your pick of favorites from Sins of a Solar Empire to SOTS to whatever else) or ground combat (ImpGalII, StarDrive, a host of others, maybe Planetary Annihilation if you want to count it since it doesn't fit that neatly into the RTS slot). I guess you might tell me it's substance, but half the forum will tell you why MoO2 trumps it. If you claim the ship editor is its primary winning point that's a matter of taste and probably I'll ask how much you've played around with a few others, Stardrive included. Is it stories, events, shit you find? I typically go to the really small but soulful games for that sort of exploration simply because of the higher proportion of interesting content in terms of what you come across, rather than just 'you found something! +1 to your sources of space-titanium.' If you tell me that GalCiv has that going for it, I might honestly get interested. Or is it diplomacy, strategy with more to it than just being a superpower and deal-making where it's not basically all reduced to favor-trading with a score indicating how much the sentient rock guys love you on a scale from none to a hundred? I don't think I've come across a space 4x where they manage to make it fun to try that. Hell, I'm not sure anything remotely like a 4x has ever managed except MAYBE KoDP and that's barely going to fit into the category.
