clarification (special review for Curst!)
Played a little more. Does this thing ever get harder? It's more difficult to die than it is to stay alive. It's like the infinite life bar of Metal Gear Solid 3 with orbs to heal you to full health appearing every few seconds from doing almost nothing. The game is absolutely gorgeous, and the fatalities are great, but they lose their shock value the two dozenth time you do them. Stab minotaur in face, medusa head rip, head rip, face stab, head rip. The combat is kind of shallow. Hit one button to attack, hold down block to deflect all but the strongest attacks (that are slow and can be easily dodged). Even if you get it, fuck it. It just takes off a tiny sliver of life. The combat is pretty much a Dragon's Lair version of Ninja Gaiden. It's gorgeous to look at, but rather than pulling off all those cool looking moves because you're awesome, you're doing them because you hit the triangle button when the game flashes it on the screen. Ninja Gaiden lite meets Prince of Persia lite. All in all I'd say it's something you can rent on the weekend with some friends and have a blast with for an afternoon or two. Invite a dozen friends, it's just as much fun to watch as it is to play. If you want to simulate playing while you watch, grab a controller and just keep hitting the square button. It's great for some casual eye candy fun, but it's got nowhere near the depth of Devil May Cry 3, or even Ninja Gaiden. I definately don't think it's the best game ever for PS2, the most polished to a perfect sheen with great production values maybe, but not the best. Psi Ops was a better "sadistically abuse the shit out of every enemy you see" game because it was so much more open ended. Beyond Good & Evil was a better jack of all trades action/adventure game. Devil May Cry 3 is a better over the top beat'em up slugfest. God of War is better than the empty room crawling so you can swat down a couple insects before going "oooooo" at the pretty x-ray effects slogfest of Metroid Prime. Why on earth would you compare this game to Metroid Prime? It's also better than the clone of a 3 year old game with slightly better graphics and dual wielding action of Halo "god I wish I had a PC" 2. So to answer curst, yes, it's shallow. But you'll have fun with it for a little awhile. IF THIS GAME WAS A CHICK it'd be the perfect 10 in looks bimbo with no personality that you had a couple wild bedroom sessions with (where she invited her twin sister to join you and knock over their clay pot together) before ending it and going back to girl next door long-term relationship material.
