Microsoft executives have allegedly told all employees working at E3 to not use the word television when talking about the Xbox One. They say that they want to divert all attention away from the subject and onto video games. A YouTube video “summarizing” the Xbox One reveal event by cutting it down to every mention of television currently has 6.5 million views while the official Xbox One reveal video has 5.7 million. Allegedly, Microsoft is aware of the parody video and is trying to ensure that every person knows that the Xbox One is primarily a video game machine. A Microsoft employee working at E3 has told us the details of an e-mail that was sent out by the president of Interactive Entertainment Business Don Mattrick to all employees. They gave us the information under the condition of anonymity. “What I’ve been told by Don Mattrick is that we are not allowed to use the word television at all while helping people demo the Xbox One games,” said the source, “He said that we’re not even supposed to refer to the actual televisions we are using as a television. We’re supposed to call it a screen. This is how worried Microsoft is about the whole thing.” “He really does not want Microsoft to be embarrassed at E3,” continued the employee, “He even said that he is more worried about the television thing than the used games policy. If we are asked about the television features, we are supposed to bring up anything else like video games, the controller, or even the used games policy. We are supposed to divert attention away from the television features at all costs. It’s that bad.” These statements have been further collaborated with remarks made by Mattrick during a pre-E3 interview. He told reporters that “what most people got from the Xbox One reveal was that this console plays video games” and that “anyone who says otherwise is lying and trying to discredit the Xbox One’s reputation for video games.” Another source has claimed that Sony is only allowing their employees to talk about the Xbox One as long as they use the word television in the same sentence.
