The Walking Dead game
So Telltale made a Walking Dead adventure game. I'm not that far into it but I have no idea why everyone was raving about it. Every once in a while it throws a mildly entertaining quick time event at you, but most of it is chitchatting your fellow survivors. And that's where it sinks. It's an adventure game that's mostly dialog where the dialog isn't interesting. Every reviewer was going on about how great the writing is but the dialog is so wrote and pedestrian. I guess it serves me right given the source material and its fans. The other problem is that it's impossible to take slow zombies seriously anymore (even George Romero himself admitted such in the 90s remake of Night of the Living Dead). In order for them to be a threat you have to make the characters clumsy idiots to the point that you stop rooting for them. In the first 5 minutes there's no less than 7 trips and weapon fumbles. Alpha Protocol did all this as a complement to all the action. Walking Dead does a worse job when it's the entire focus. Supposed to be huge branching depending on what you say and what you do, but it's mostly mild dialog changes. Everything you say will piss one person off but make another happy. Now choose which survivor you'll save. It's only slightly less transparent and forced than Mass Effect's "choose who will go on suicide mission." I mostly petered out before the end of the first episode, checking out at a scene where slow zombies snuck up on two people in the open during broad daylight. Maybe someone can tell me if it gets better.
