Hmmm...

Strangely enough, they'd always show this and sumo on television in Beijing
I've been searching for this man for some time now. Does he seem familiar to you?
Anyhow, yeah... rugby has all kinds of really detailed rules, and lately they've started using these Experimental Law Variations which have changed the game up again, so even if you generally know the basics it's kind of a mess sometimes. I'd stick with rugby union over rugby league; the latter has this rule that when you're tackled, you're immediately allowed to get up, sort of like American football, which automatically makes it suckier to me. But maybe that's your thing, I don't know.
League came about 100 years ago because people like you complained Union was too complicated for the Islanders. League is more fun to play but is only popular in high schools and areas with poor people. Just as an American who likes soccer sounds gay, someone from the Commonwealth (real Commonwealth not this Canada SHIT) who says they like League sounds poor.
I'd start with stuff like the just-passed Six Nations tournament, which is all of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe and France playing, or the Summer or Autumn Test matches which are where the Southern Hemisphere usually beats the crap out of the Northern Hemisphere, because they've got Samoans and Maoris and shit who are like a race of natural-born rugby players, sort of like how black people are good at the current game of basketball.
So why would you recommend he watch Northern hemisphere rugby then? Rugby is considered a gentleman's game in Great Britain and they play accordingly. It's all kicking and boring-ass scrum collapsing horseshit AND they still get their ass kicked. The French are the only Northern hemisphere team barely worth watching. If you want to watch good rugby, you recommend the Super 14 or the Tri-Nations.
