DLC as episodic content by Fussbett 03/17/2009, 2:28pm PDT
I just found out that the third DLC for Fallout 3, "Broken Steel" will bump the level cap to 30 and "continue" the main story line. This made me realize that I would buy new chapters in the Fallout 3 universe forever, like downloadable Rock Band songs. Not Operation Anchorage, and maybe not even The Pitt (but probably The Pitt), but certainly anything that extends the awesome tale of my awesome Road Warrior. I think I'm close to finishing the main quest now, and like bink (bink!!!) I'm intentionally playing slowly to make it last.

This is the way to do episodic content. Release a huge game and then constantly add new stories to it. I suppose at some point someone has to do a profit and loss evaluation of how much money they make from that versus putting the effort into a full sequel. Obviously Madden shouldn't choose this route. Half-Life 2 is great and everything, but imagine they gave you a little something to do for $10 in the YEAR(S) separating the sequel episodes? Like the Lost Coast! Hopefully you could put a level design team to work on the DLC while the core group sets about making sequels to your franchise.

Anyway, that's a long ramble to say I'm excited about Broken Steel, even though I haven't finished the regular game yet.
