This is 100% correct. I can't tell you how many liberal arts classes I aced simply by listening to the prof at the beginning and learning how he/she wanted me to write a paper or whatever. I also couldn't tell you how many people got C's on their papers because they didn't pay attention to the prof and did whatever the hell they wanted. Professors are lazy (which is why they stayed in academia) and they don't want to have to sift through your bullshit to grade your paper. And they don't want to hear your arguments in class because you're either right and making them look stupid, or wrong and wasting their time.
